Customers seeking to travel as a group should book the ride (reserve the seats) at least sixty two (62) days to the date of travel.
How long is the journey from Nairobi to Mombasa (vice versa) and what are the departure and arrival times?
The Madaraka Express Passenger Service offers two types of train service each making two round-trips a day.
- The Intercounty train runs in the morning and makes stopovers in Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Voi, Miasenyi and Mariakani county stations.
- The Express train does not stop along the way during the course of the journey.
Mombasa – Nairobi
The inter-county (morning) train departs Mombasa at 8:00 am and takes five hours, forty two minutes arriving in Nairobi at 1:42 pm.
The Express train leaves Mombasa at 3:15 pm and takes five hours arriving in Nairobi at 8:15 pm.
Nairobi – Mombasa
The inter-county (morning) train departs Nairobi at 8:20 am and takes five hours, fifty eight minutes arriving in Mombasa at 2:18 pm.
The express (afternoon) train departs Nairobi at 2:35 pm and takes four hours, forty three minutes arriving in Mombasa at 7:18 pm.
What is the train speed and passenger capacity?
The passenger train (DF11 series) has a design speed of 158 km/h and an operation speed of 120 km/h.
The passenger train seats one thousand two hundred and sixty (1,260) passengers.
What services are offered on the train?

There are two trains currently operating on the line. E2 leaves Nairobi at 9am while the other E1 leaves Mombasa at the same time daily.
What is the location of the Nairobi terminus?
The Nairobi Terminus is located in Syokimau area of Nairobi County; 20 kilometres away from the Nairobi CBD.
What is the location of the Mombasa terminus?
Mombasa Terminus is located in Miritini area of Mombasa County; 11 kilometres away from Mombasa CBD.
How do I get to the train terminus?
Kenya Railways has provided bus and train connect services to and from the Mombasa and Nairobi Termini.
- In Nairobi, catch the commuter train from the CBD railway station at 6:20 am. The same service is available upon arrival from Mombasa to transport customers to the CBD railway station. The fare is at Ksh. 50
- In Mombasa, customers are picked up at the old Mombasa Railways station on Mijikenda Street and transported to the Terminus by buses. The same buses will transport customers on arrival from the Mombasa Terminus to Mombasa CBD. The cost is Ksh. 100

What is an eTicket?
An eTicket is an SMS sent to your mobile or an email after we have revieved your payment, which contains a booking code we use in verifying that you are the right customer with a confirmed booking before you print ticket that the terminus.
